Peter Botham, Managing Director at Shed Grounds Maintenance, has won the prestigious ‘Businessperson of the Year Award’ at the Derbyshire Times Business Excellence Awards. The awards night was held at Casa Hotel, Chesterfield on Thursday 14th November, playing host to businesses from across Derbyshire.
A true story of ambition, Peter formed Shed in 2003 with a small bank loan to buy a van and some equipment. He then set off to win contracts and maintain the grounds by himself. Within six months his drive for success created a need to recruit his first two employees, one of whom still works for the company today. From these humble beginnings the company now operates on a nationwide basis with satellite depots, and continues to grow through the reputation developed by Peter and his team.
Peter’s passion for the outdoors started as a small boy working with his grandfather. It’s fair to say he wasn’t so successful in his early years, leaving school with no exam passes and then not achieving at the local college. He spent a few years working in his family’s business which he also felt wasn’t for him. Peter didn’t know at the time he had dyslexia and after 1-1 tuition, Peter successfully resat 5 O levels with impressive results. This allowed him to attend Merrist Wood Horticultural College and his journey into the trade he loves began.
Peter worked for several years for a large successful national grounds maintenance company. He learnt a great deal and admired them considerably. However, the desire to run his own business was burning and in 2003 Peter set up Shed.
Peter commented: “Its’ great to be recognised at such a highly prestigious and competitive local awards event. We strive to achieve our own business goals but also to have a positive impact on our local community; it’s great that this is recognised for me and my team.”
Shed also attended the Derbyshire Times Business Excellence Awards in 2017 and won the ‘Corporate Social Responsibility and Environment Award’, recognising Shed’s support to the local community and their environmentally credentials.
